Project Overview
Bournemouth & Poole College commissioned a comprehensive furniture fit-out to modernise several teaching and administrative spaces. The brief required improved acoustics, dynamic learning layouts, ergonomic staff workstations, and enhanced collaboration areas—while maintaining a visually cohesive, contemporary aesthetic.
Our talented design team delivered fully integrated workspaces including acoustic treatments, height-adjustable desking, collaborative digital-learning furniture, and ergonomic office solutions.
Height Adjustable DesksOur Space Planning Strategy
A full space-planning exercise was carried out to ensure the new layouts supported teaching flow, staff productivity, and future flexibility.
Spaces were reorganised into clearly defined zones:
- Focused learning zones with individual desks
- Collaborative hubs placed centrally in ICT rooms
- Quiet staff and student zones located away from circulation routes
- Technology access points integrated into furniture layouts
The Fit-Out Process
- Pre-Installation Preparation
- Detailed measured surveys
- Acoustic calculations for optimal placement of hanging baffles
- Delivery & On-Site Coordination
- Staggered furniture deliveries to minimise room downtime
- On-site liaison with IT and estates teams for power integration
- Testing & Commissioning
Height-Adjustable Desks:
- Electric frames assembled and anchored
- Power modules flush-mounted onsite
- Cable trays fitted to maintain a clean finish
Collaborative Feature Tables:
- Central islands built first for accurate alignment
- Integrated data/power columns connected and concealed
- Perimeter benching added to maximise screen visibility and student flow
- Testing & Commissioning
- All power modules tested and tagged
- Sit-stand mechanisms calibrated
- Acoustic effectiveness assessed post-installation
- Final walkthrough with college representatives
Acoustic Design - Hanging Baffle System
To improve speech clarity and reduce reverberation in busy teaching areas, the project incorporated a grid of suspended acoustic baffles.
- High-absorption PET panels
- Mounted in linear runs above teaching zones
- Colour-coordinated with the college’s interior palette
- Designed to maintain an open-ceiling industrial aesthetic
These baffles significantly improved acoustic comfort, especially in large, hard-surface classrooms previously prone to echo.
Suspended Acoustic PanelsClassroom Desking Fit-Out
All teaching spaces were refitted with height-adjustable desks finished in matte black, providing both durability and a unified modern aesthetic.
Key features include:
- Electric sit-stand adjustment with intuitive controls
- Integrated power modules: desk-mounted twin sockets + USB-C
- Cable-management trays for a clean work surface
- Black steel frames and slimline worktops for a minimalistic look
- Double monitor arms in black, keeping the desktop clear, achieving maximum working space
These desks support both ergonomic wellbeing and flexible teaching formats.
Cable ManagementComputer Room - Collaborative Feature Tables
The computer suite was transformed into a multi-purpose digital learning hub by introducing a central collaborative island:
- Large feature, modular tables placed in the room’s centre
- Integrated power, data, and monitor arms
- Seating arranged in uniform straight patterns
- Facilitates group projects, technical demonstrations, and hybrid learning
Perimeter benching with desktop PCs surrounds the central collaborative zone, balancing individual and group learning environments.
Feature TablesOutcome
The completed fit-out delivered:
- Stronger acoustic performance, whilst providing quiet zones
- A visually cohesive, black-accented modern workspace
- Increased staff and student ergonomics through sit-stand functionality
- Enhanced collaboration in the computer room through multi-user feature, modular tables
The new spaces now support a more dynamic learning experience and reflect the college’s ambitions for modern, future-ready education environments.
