A Guide To Office Furniture Measurements
Furnishing an office can be an exciting process, but it’s helpful to first understand how office furniture dimensions are measured. After all, there are only so many times you can read the words width, height, and depth before they all begin blending into one. As the industry experts – with a heap of successful office furniture fitouts behind us – we thought we’d do something to help. Read our office furniture measurements guide below to ensure you’re fully prepared before choosing your own commercial office furniture.
Why Are Office Furniture Measurements Important?
Taking the time to measure your office before purchasing any furniture could save you from a host of problems later on. The last thing you’ll want is for a large order of desks to arrive, only to discover they don’t fit in the space available. You can avoid this problem by asking yourself a few questions. How are you going to distribute the furniture in the space you have? What are the shape and exact dimensions of the space? What business office furniture would be best suited?
Having an understanding of office furniture measurements will help you navigate any potential issues with ease, ensuring your office slots together nicely and is fit for purpose.
What Is Meant By Width, Height and Depth?
Width, height, and depth are all dimensions of measurement. It’s usual to display these measurements in the order of width first, height second, and depth third.
These measurements relate to the following:
- Width (W):The measurement of the product from side to side.
- Height (H):The measurement from the top of the product to the floor (if it is free-standing) or to the bottom of the product.
- Depth (D):The measurement of the product from front to back.
The same principle applies whether discussing commercial office furniture or any other industry.
Office Desk Measurements
Width
The widths of office desks will vary, allowing you to choose the right option no matter your needs. Standard widths range from 1000mm to 1800mm, though the most popular office desk measurement is 1200mm wide.
It’s worth noting that the minimum width for your desk should be at least 600mm to remain functional. This size is usually used for home desks but is increasingly being used in offices as well. This can be especially beneficial for spaces where space is limited, though you should avoid trying to cram as much furniture into your space as possible. When deciding on your office desk dimensions, consider where the desk is going to be located, what equipment you need to put on your desk, and how much free space you need in order to work. Questions to consider might include:
- Will you be using your desk for long periods?
- Do you use a desktop or laptop?
- Will you need to use multiple monitors?
Depth
When it comes to the depth of your office desk, the industry standard sizes are between 600mm and 800mm. This depth is ideal as it will comfortably house a storage pedestal beneath. An office desk with a depth of 800mm would also suit a variety of office seating, and should comfortably fit your computer equipment too.
It’s also worth checking the depth of any under-desk or desk-high storage that you might already be using. You don’t want it to be deeper than the desk itself or it will stick out. On the other hand, having storage that is too narrow could make it difficult to reach from your desk.
Height
Office desk measurements are usually 725mm or 740mm high. This height is deemed suitable for people of most heights provided they’re using a regular office chair.
If you require a different height, you could consider a standing desk.
Height–adjustable desks are also very popular. They can range from 640mm to 1300mm in height, giving you the flexibility needed for a busy, changing environment.
